3 Phantoms Fly Off To Malmo

3 Phantoms Fly Off To Malmo
7th February 2018

This week, 3 of the Phantoms are off to Malmo to take part in the Para Ice Hockey tournament as part of the Malmo Open with the UK Top Guns.

Defenceman Darren Brown, Forward Kieran O’Meara and Coach Ian Offers will be off to compete with teams from Sweden, Denmark, Slovakia and Russia at the 3 day tournament which runs from Friday to Sunday.

The very first Malmö Open was launched in 1977 with table tennis as the only represented sport. That year the tournament consisted of 25 participants. By 2016 the number of participants had risen to 2518 competing in 18 different sport events.

The Malmö Open aims to be the perfect debut tournament for rookies and youths as well as meeting the requirements as a nice challenging event for experienced athletes. Most sports offers a selection of events for both non-licensed participation and classes restricted only for classified and licensed players. Therefore Malmö Open has become important for young athletes. The ambition for Malmö Open is to be a recruitment event welcoming clubs from all over the world to register participants.

The UK Top Guns is a team of Para Ice Hockey Players selected from the teams in the UK. They are a mixture of Able Bodied and Disabled players and all play under the unified badge of the Top Guns.

On February 5th 2015 led by Ian “Maverick” Warner, Karl “Goose” Nicholson and Jamo “Viper” James, a group of the finest British Para Ice Hockey Players we had to offer took to the Ice at the 2015 Malmo Open and the legend that is the UK Top Guns Para Ice Hockey was born.

The Peterborough Phantoms wish all of the Top Guns the best of luck at the tournament.
