Mayhem 5 - 0 Phantoms

Mayhem v Phantoms
28th July 2019 - 4:15 pm at Planet Ice Altrincham

The Peterborough Phantoms traveled to Manchester for their final road trip of the season to face the Mayhem on Sunday evening. The game saw both teams playing with depleted squads with the Mayhem having no subs and the Phantoms just the one.

Despite the lack of change-ups, neither team held back, and the game was played at a frantic pace. The homeside took the lead against the run of play on 5:06 when Rob Allen picked out Karl Nicholson with his back to goal. A quick spin and shot from Nicholson saw the puck beat the unsighted David O’Meara in the Phantoms goal.

On 7:09 the Mayhem doubled their lead when Rob Allen picked out Anthony Booth in the slot to shoot through a crowded Phantoms defensive zone and into the net.

At the other end of the ice Dougie Hankinson was being kept busy ion the Mayhem goal as Scotty Trigg-Turner and Kieran O’Meara both had chances to draw a goal back for the Phantoms. However, despite giving up some big rebounds the Phantoms couldn’t get the puck past the Mayhem’s backstopper.

Phantoms wet 3-down on 18:42. A collision between a number of Phantoms players fighting for the puck in the neutral zone sent Karl Nicholson and Anthony Booth away on a 2v0 breakaway, and Nicholson sent the puck to Booth to fire home.

With the Phantoms being outshot 3 to 1, David O’Meara was the busiest man on the ice, keeping the Mayhem at bay. There were a number of times that the Mayhem thought they had scored, only to see O’Meara pluck the puck out of the air as it headed towards the top corner of the net.

With the clock running down in the middle stanza, the Mayhem made it 4-0 as Nicholson escaped the Phantoms defence on a 1v1 break to slot the puck into the net on 28:33.

An early Mayhem at the start of the final period saw Nicholsons shot initially blocked by O’Meara, but he could only watch on as the rebound dropped to Rob Allen who’s first time shot gave the Mayhem a 5th goal of the game.

Mayhem started to tire during the final period, but despite all of their possession the Phantoms couldn’t break Hankinsons shutout and at the buzzer it was the homeside who claimed the points and the clean sheet.

Man of the Match for the Phantoms went to Ashley Greening and for Mayhem the beers went to Graham Wilson.
